The Vines of Babass

Sébastien Dervieux, known as Babass, is an Angevin winemaker known for several decades for his natural winemaking. He set up one of the first zero-zero estates in Anjou: Domaine des Griottes. It was in 2011 that Babass created his own estate with his wife Agnès. They are based in Rochefort-sur-Loire, in the heart of Anjou Noir. They grow Gamay, Grolleau, Cabernet Franc and a little Chenin, including some plots from the Hacquet family, pioneers among the pioneers of natural wines after the Second World War. It is also through the pretty Joseph-Anne-Françoise vintage that he will pay tribute to them.
The Babass vines, approximately 4 hectares, are all looked after and worked according to the principles of organic farming. The harvest is obviously manual. Winemaking is non-interventionist, without any input, all fermentations take place naturally, no fining, no filtration. Babass wines have no sulfur added during bottling. Its reds are macerated in whole clusters and its whites are pressed very slowly. Babass wines are of great purity and always very lively. He is also a character of great generosity whom we particularly like; very endearing and like its wines. Our favorite: Groll N'Roll, a very fresh, digestible Grolleau, a must!
