George Comte
Georges Comte settled in Moutherot in Doubs, 1 hour from Beaune, towards the end of the 1980s. A lover of wine above all, and especially of great Burgundy wines, in his youth he traveled the Côte d'Or in search of best vintages. However, the excessive use of chemistry, sulfur and the increased standardization of Burgundy wines ended up putting him off.
He therefore decided to recover 8 hectares of vines in Moutherot, “a unique and exceptional land, similar to that of Montrachet”... His vines are worked biodynamically by Antoine, a neighbor. Georges subsequently produces wines without input, with patience as the only magic ingredient. The whites spend 24 to 48 months in barrels, then 10 to 15 years in bottle before being marketed. During our meeting with Georges in 2022, we taste whites from 2004, 2008 or 2009 at the estate for example. Very far from being tired, the wines are precise, straightforward and elegant, even dashing!
Putting your nose into Roche Bonive or Les Pélerins, for example, is like rediscovering Chardonnay a second time. Georges Comte's wines are recognizable among thousands with their inimitable style, at once rich, pure and evolved. It's a name that people pass around among lovers of great white wines, whether it's from Montrachet or Moutherot...!
