Les 13 Lunes
A mountain vineyard at the gateway to Chartreuse
Mont Granier as guardian of the climate
Domaine des 13 Lunes is located in the heights of the Chartreuse Natural Park, on the edge of the forest, which offers a unique setting for the creation of mountain wines. Nestled at an altitude of 500 meters, the vines do not seem very high, yet the majestic Mont Granier which overlooks them, extends more than 1,500 meters higher. And the latter plays an essential role in regulating the climate. It can decide whether the region will be subject to cold or heat, protected or exposed to storms.
A local grape variety on a rugged terroir
Alpine biodiversity and geological heritage
The estate, managed by Sylvain Liotard, is characterized primarily by local grape varieties of Jacquère, Altesse , Mondeuse , Gamay , and Velteliner. All the vines are grown organically and biodynamically. The terroir, formed by a major landslide in the 13th century, is rich in limestone of varying sizes, mixed with silt and clay in varying proportions. The vines are planted in tight rows, with a density of 7,500 to 10,000 vines per hectare.
Demanding biodynamics, in the service of purity
Gentle practices, natural winemaking
Biodynamic farming involves careful attention to the soil, disease prevention, and the use of herbal decoctions and teas, while intervening as little as possible during winemaking. Sylvain and his team favor traditional practices, such as the application of horn manure and horn silica, minimal doses of copper, a little sulfur, herbal teas, and the use of indigenous yeasts.
